WHO IS WOMEN AWARE DEFENCE

Hi, my name is Leanne, owner of Women Aware Defence. I am a passionate martial artist with over 10 years experience. I have training in both the grappling and striking arts. And would love to inspire and educate you to become the version of yourself. Not just in martial arts but also as a person.

I started my blog, Women Aware Defence, because I’ve seen how often women are told to “just be careful” instead of being given real tools to protect themselves. It’s personal for me. I’ve heard too many stories—friends, family, and even strangers—feeling unsafe in situations that should’ve been ordinary. That’s when I realised this isn’t just a conversation about safety; it’s about confidence, freedom, and standing tall in a world that doesn’t always feel fair. Empowerment isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a necessity. For me, this blog is more than writing; it’s a way to share skills, inspire strength, and make sure women know they’re worth fighting for.

Starting Women Aware Defence wasn’t just an idea—it was born from moments that changed everything for me. Each story, each lesson, shaped the blog into what it is today. Protecting ourselves is something we’re rarely taught, yet it’s one of the most empowering lessons we can learn.

From Personal Experience

For me, this journey started years ago with a wake-up call. A close friend shared her own terrifying experience of feeling powerless in a situation she should’ve been able to handle confidently. It hit me hard because I’d been there too—frozen, unsure, and afraid to stand up for myself. Those moments stuck with me like they happened yesterday.

But it wasn’t just my experiences. Hearing similar stories from women online made me realise this isn’t an isolated issue. Whether it’s walking home at night or facing an uncomfortable encounter, too many of us have been told to just “avoid it” like that’s an answer. Avoidance isn’t empowerment. I wanted to stop being a spectator to fear and start becoming an advocate for strength.

Learning martial arts felt like discovering a secret superpower and I knew I had to share it. The day I stood up for myself for the first time, it wasn’t just a win. It became a mission.

The Importance of Self-Defence

Why does self-defence matter, especially for women? Because it changes everything. It’s not just about learning how to punch or block (though that’s helpful). It’s about feeling like you’re in control of your life again.

Self-defence builds confidence that radiates into every part of life. Knowing you have tools to handle potential threats gives you freedom. Think about that: freedom to walk home without your heart pounding, go on adventures without second-guessing your safety, and trust in your ability to protect yourself.

Every woman deserves access to resources that prioritise her safety and confidence. Self-defence training is about offering a blend of physical techniques, mental strategies, and adaptable accessibility options.

Key benefits of martial arts for women:
  • Confidence: No more second-guessing every step you take.
  • Awareness: You start spotting potential risks before they even become threats.
  • Strength: Physical AND mental power—it’s a package deal.
  • Independence: Freedom to live life without limits or fear.

When I started practicing, I realised it’s so much more than just knowing “moves.” It’s a mindset. It says, “I deserve to be safe, and I won’t apologise for it.”

Self-defence opens doors to strength we didn’t know we had. Trust me, it’s not about becoming fearless—it’s about not letting fear control you. That’s why Women Aware Defence exists: to make sure every woman knows she’s worth the fight—for herself, her space, and her safety.

Empowering Women Through Knowledge

Knowledge is more than just information—it’s power. When women have the tools and skills to protect themselves, it sparks a transformation. It’s not just about safety; it’s about reclaiming control over their lives, building confidence, and setting boundaries. This section of the blog focuses on how I use my martial arts knowledge to empower women every day.

Sharing Self-Defence Techniques

I created this blog to be a hub for actionable self-defence techniques that any woman can use. You won’t find overly complicated martial arts moves here. Instead, I focus on simple, practical methods that can be applied in real-world situations. Here are just a few examples:

  • Basic strikes and hits: Techniques like palm heel strikes, elbow jabs, and knee hits can quickly disable an attacker.
  • Escaping holds: Breaking grips by rotating wrists, leveraging joints, or targeting sensitive areas like the nose or groin.
  • Using your voice: Learning how to shout commands like “Stop!” or “Back off!” to attract attention and deter threats.
  • Everyday objects as tools: How to turn keys, pens, or even a water bottle into effective self-defense tools.
  • Environmental awareness: Understanding exits, dark areas, and what to avoid in risky settings.

These tactics are easy to learn and remember, making them accessible for women of all ages and fitness levels.

Building Confidence and Resilience

Knowledge doesn’t just prepare you—it transforms you. Knowing how to defend yourself goes beyond the physical. It’s about shifting your mindset. Have you ever walked into a room and felt invisible or vulnerable? When you know you can protect yourself, those feelings start to disappear.

Self-defence builds confidence incrementally. Every time you practice a kick or block, you’re saying to yourself: “I can do this. I am capable.” Over time, that confidence bleeds into other areas of your life—whether it’s a presentation at work or setting boundaries in relationships.

It’s also a major resilience-booster. Life throws curveballs, and being equipped to face them makes you feel less like a passenger and more like the driver. If anything, learning self-defence teaches you how to bounce back stronger. It tells you, “Yes, hard things happen, but you’re ready.”

So, how does this blog make a difference? By providing the knowledge to empower, spark confidence, and foster independence, one post at a time. Empowerment starts here, with practical tools and the belief that every woman deserves to feel strong and secure in their skin.

Mental Preparedness

What good is strength if your mind isn’t ready? Mental preparedness lays a strong foundation by focusing on awareness and quick thinking. Training programs teach how to recognize danger, assess risks, and respond under pressure. Here’s what to expect from this element:

  • Situational Awareness: Learning to spot red flags and avoid dangerous areas or circumstances.
  • De-escalation Techniques: Practicing calm but firm verbal responses that can defuse tension without physical confrontation.
  • Confidence Building: Overcoming fear through role-playing scenarios and visualization exercises.
  • Reaction Drills: Simulated situations to prepare for swift decision-making when seconds count.

Think of mental training as your first line of defence. Being alert, assertive, and prepared can significantly reduce your vulnerability.

The Role of Martial Arts in Self-Defence

Not all self-defence systems rely on strength. Martial arts like jiu-jitsu and Judo focus on leveraging an adversary’s energy against them. These skills are particularly empowering for women who have advantages such as flexibility and agility. I myself have trained in a variety of different styles in order to become more adaptable in my martial arts training.

Support for Victims of Abuse

Victims of abuse need empathetic and accessible support to start rebuilding their lives. Whether it’s connecting with professionals, calling for help, or joining local communities, there are numerous resources available. Here’s how to access them.

Accessing Support Services

Knowing where to begin can feel overwhelming. That’s why there are services dedicated to offering a starting point and ongoing help. Whether you’re a victim or know someone who is, these options can make all the difference:

  • 1800RESPECT (1800 737 732): An excellent resource for confidential support and advice. Available 24/7.
  • Domestic Violence Services: Many states have initiatives to assist victims with counselling, legal advice, and emergency housing.
  • Victim Support Units: Various government and non-government organizations provide case management services for abuse survivors.

Remember, you don’t need to face this journey alone—countless compassionate experts are ready to provide guidance and reassurance.

Helplines

Helplines offer immediate and confidential ways to seek support. They’re staffed by experienced professionals trained to handle abuse cases. These are vital Australian helplines victims can contact:

  • 1800RESPECT (1800 737 732): National support for sexual assault, domestic, and family violence victims.
  • Lifeline (13 11 14): A general crisis support line with experienced counselors.
  • MensLine Australia (1300 78 99 78): Offers resources for male victims or concerned individuals involved in domestic abuse situations.
  • Kids Helpline (1800 55 1800): Focused on young individuals seeking help about violence or abuse.
  • Translating and Interpreting Service (131 450): For non-English-speaking victims, this helps access multilingual assistance.

These numbers could be life-saving. Save them, share them, and keep them accessible.

Local Support Networks

Support isn’t just limited to national organizations. Local networks provide a sense of community and a safe space for victims:

  • Women’s Shelters:
  • Many regions across Australia have safe accommodations for women and their children fleeing violence.
  • Legal Aid Organizations:
  • They offer legal advice for restraining orders, child custody, and more.
  • Community Outreach Centers:
  • Centers like the White Ribbon Organization conduct campaigns and provide local resources tailored toward specific demographics.
  • Cultural and Indigenous Support Networks:
  • Groups such as Djirra offer specialized services for Aboriginal women and communities.

Building connections within these networks fosters strength and resilience, often being a key part of the healing process. Residents should also check their state’s dedicated services, such as Victim Assist in Queensland or regional services in Western Australia.

These networks ensure victims never feel isolated and help with practical and emotional recovery strategies vital for a fresh start.

MY LONG TERM PROJECT AT WOMEN AWARE DEFENCE

As I look ahead, I see Women Aware Defence becoming more than a blog—it’s a movement. It’s a community, a resource hub, and a platform for action. Expanding the blog is about pushing boundaries and creating a truly inclusive space where every woman feels equipped and valued.

Expanding Topics and Outreach

I believe safety isn’t a one-size-fits-all topic. Too often, the focus is narrowed to physical safety alone, but it’s more than that. Women face challenges that go beyond direct threats.

That’s why I plan to explore broader themes, such as:
  • Online safety: Dealing with harassment, hacking, and protecting digital identities.
  • Emotional boundaries: Recognising toxic relationships and asserting limits.
  • Cultural safety dynamics: How identity impacts safety and the unique challenges women face worldwide.
  • Safety gear and tools: Testing and reviewing products designed to help women stay safe.

By widening the conversation, I hope to meet readers where they are—whether their worries are about walking home or navigating the web.

Imagine this: What if we could become the go-to source for women seeking security, independence, and confidence? That’s the dream I’m chasing.

Engaging with the Readers

This blog isn’t a one-woman project—it’s as strong as the community it serves. That’s why I want readers to play a bigger role in shaping its future. How? Here are a few ideas I’m tossing around:

  • Submit stories: Share your experiences, lessons, or wins. The more perspectives, the stronger we become.
  • Suggest topics: What keeps you up at night? Let me know so I can write about it.
  • Guest posts: Got tips or expertise? I’d love to feature your voice on the blog.
  • Polls and surveys: From favorite self-defense tools to feedback on posts, your input matters.
  • Think of Women Aware Defence as a potluck—everyone brings something, and together we make a feast of ideas, support, and knowledge. With your help, this blog will feel more like a conversation than just a resource. After all, we’re in this together, right?

I’m also looking into creating a more structured learning path with a mix of these formats. This way, whether you have 5 minutes or an hour to spare, you’ll find something to suit your schedule.

This isn’t just about adding more content—it’s about making self-defense accessible to every woman, on her terms.

Conclusion

Women Aware Defence is more than a blog—it’s a piece of my heart and a call to action. It’s my way of turning fear into strength, creating a space where women can reclaim control over their lives.

Through stories, resources, and shared experiences, I’ve seen how knowledge can empower and build confidence. My dream is for this platform to continue inspiring women to take that first step toward feeling safe and unstoppable.

Your voice matters here too. Share your thoughts or experiences in the comments, or pass this on to someone who could benefit. Together, we’re stronger. Let’s keep building this incredible community!
