I strongly believe that only when you understand your “why” can you accomplish amazing things in martial arts or life. Ask yourself these vital questions before you start. What are you trying to accomplish by beginning this journey? and Are you doing this for yourself or someone else? It is an activity that is accessible to people of all ages and can be learned by anyone with true desire and the discipline. Martial arts a beginners guide = a key to success.

When I was training with new kids in the junior class, I would casually ask if they had trained in a martial art before and what their goals were. In order for me to feel a connection and understand the best way to help them. Sometimes a few would say they didn’t want to be there but felt pressured by their parents. Not the best source of motivation to begin a martial arts program right ? Unfortunately these kids only did a couple of belts and pulled out. They were not there for the right reasons, which was heartbreaking.

Before we begin, we’ll take a quick look at the different types of martial arts so you can decide which form is right for you. Let’s get kicking.

WHAT IS MARTIAL ARTS (martial arts a beginners guide)

The earliest records of martial arts date back to ancient china, where combat styles were used for training in warfare and self-defence. Over time, martial arts evolved and spread across Asia, later becoming popular in Europe and the Americas.

In their original form, martial arts are an organized system and tradition of combat anywhere in the world. The reasons for martial arts in different parts of the world include:

  • Self-defence
  • Enforcement of military rules and laws
  • Competitive sports and other competitions
  • Physical, spiritual and mental development
  • As a form of entertainment
  • To gain self-confidence and inculcate self-discipline
  • Personal fitness

The number of martial arts practised around the world is as innumerable as the cultures and traditions in which they have their genesis. Dominant martial arts include:

KARATE

Originating from Okinawa in Japan, by Gichin Funakoshi. Karate in Japanese means “empty hand” This style teaches hand-based combat for self-defence. With Karate, you’ll learn how to fight and defend without weapons. Most training focuses on blocking the opponent, exerting force and impact with the bare feet or hands, as well as shins, knees and forearms. This seeks the development of defensive and counterattacking body movements.
