Overlooking the Ocean

You get to build your perfect space for reading and writing. What’s it like?

For me there has been something magical about reading books and writing about all the things I learned on my martial arts journey. But just imagine when they’re paired sharing my passion mixed with the tranquil sound of the ocean waves and sweeping views of endless blue. My perfect reading and writing space would be a  perfect blend of creativity, calm, and the inspiration found where the sea meets sky.

Here’s what my ideal setup would look like.

The View: Where Words Meet Waves

Imagine this: a cozy corner perched atop a cliff, with a front-row seat to the ocean’s rhythm. The soft crash of waves below feels like nature’s own soundtrack. The salty breeze is refreshing, gently teasing my imagination as I write or maybe pulling me deeper into a story that I am reading.

The expanse of the ocean sparks creativity. It’s would feel like a canvas of infinite possibilities — vast, serene, and untamed. Every ripple and every breeze whispers your dreams waiting to be captured on paper.

The Setup: Simplistic Yet Inspired

Let’s talk about the essentials. I’d set up a spacious wooden desk washed in sunlight. A comfy chair with just enough cushion to keep me seated for hours. This spot should face the window, framing the endless ocean view like a painting.

Throw in a few potted plants for color and life. Maybe a stack of my favorite books piled on one corner. My fountain pen and a trusty notebook? Always within reach. Simple, but it creates a bloggers heaven.

For reading, I’d have a sunlit nook cushioned with oversize pillows. Think warm throws, perfect for chilly mornings or windy evenings. Natural light pours in by day, while a soft reading lamp takes over after sunset.

Soundtrack of the Sea

If you’ve ever sat near the ocean, you know it sings the most serene melody. And honestly, it beats any playlist I could find. The waves roll and stretch like punctuation marks in a story. The occasional squawk of a seagull or distant hum of a boat adds unexpected charm.

The sound isn’t just soothing, it’s an anchor for me to focus. In a world that’s all noise and notifications, being surrounded by nature reminds me to pause, breathe, and create.

Why the Ocean Inspires Creativity

The ocean isn’t just beautiful — it pulls you in, almost like a muse with a hypnotic rhythm. It’s unpredictable yet comforting. For any writer, this would duality sparks ideas. Each cresting wave feels like a fresh start, a reminder that dreams, just like tides, ebb and flow.

Reading by the ocean to me would feel like diving into another world, literally and metaphorically. The wide horizons mirror the imagination’s limitless boundaries.

Lighting: Natural Is Everything

I love being in the sunlight when writing. As the natural light fuels creativity, with each golden ray energising my thoughts. The ocean-facing window ensures that morning light greets me, while sunsets paint a soft glow over my desk.

And when reading in the evenings it would need a different sort of vibe. Soft amber lighting, mimicking the warmth of twilight, would fill the room. This encourages me to settle in with a book, even if the stars have taken over the sky.

The Coffee Corner

No perfect space is complete without liquid motivation. Just a step away from my desk would sit a small coffee station. Aromatic brews keep me fueled whether reading through a gripping novel or battling writer’s block.

Let’s be honest – there’s nothing better than sipping hot coffee while staring at the horizon. Okay, maybe adding a book into the mix tops it.

Minimalist Surroundings, Maximum Comfort

While the view provides endless stimulation, the room itself would be minimal. Clutter distracts me, and I prefer a clean slate to keep my thoughts clear.

But minimal doesn’t mean boring. Warm wood tones, soft linen curtains, and a couple of art pieces are enough. They set the right mood — sophisticated, peaceful, and versatile.

How This Setup Fuels Both Reading and Writing

A well-designed space isn’t about being flashy; it’s about sparking joy. When I read, the ocean takes away distractions. It feels like an invitation to escape into fiction.

When I write, the same view challenges me. Can my words stand up to something this grand? It keeps me humbled, motivated, and inspired to do more.

The atmospheric blend of crashing waves and peaceful surroundings turns my reading and writing into an immersive experience rather than just a hobby.

Conclusion: A Dream Worth Chasing

My ideal reading and writing space by the ocean isn’t just a wish; it’s a lifestyle goal. It’s about finding harmony — between nature and words, between calm and creativity.

One day, when I finally sit by that cliff or beach house, I know that all elements — from the view to the salt in the air — will whisper, “Write. Create. Imagine.” Until then, I’ll keep dreaming.

And isn’t that how the best stories begin?
