My story
Turning My Struggles Into Strength

Passion fuels everything I do, and “Women Aware Defence” is no exception. It’s more than just a blog—it’s a mission to empower. Women face challenges every day, some spoken, others hidden. This blog became my way to speak up, educate, and inspire strength. Let me tell you my story and why it means so much to me.

Starting with a Purpose

When I launched this blog, it wasn’t just for writing-it was for creating change. You ever feel like society lets serious issues slide under the rug? Not here. My goal was to shine a light on women defending themselves emotionally, mentally, and physically.

I asked myself: How can I help women feel safe in a sometimes unsafe world? My answer was building awareness, providing education, and encouraging action. Each post is crafted to offer something valuable, whether it’s advice, resources, or just a little inspiration.

My Story And Journey Through Martial Arts

When I first walked into a martial arts gym, I didn’t realise it would become such a transformative part of my life. Every style taught me something unique, from persistence to respect, as I grew from technique to technique. Each class felt like its own life lesson wrapped in sweat and effort.

Exploring Grappling Arts

Grappling is where I began, which demanded finesse instead of brute force. It taught me one of life’s greatest lessons: timing and leverage often beat raw power. In BJJ, there’s something humbling about being pinned by someone half your size because they know more about angles than you.

Judo showed me how to not just take someone down but also how to fall properly—critical for life, not just fights. Falling isn’t failure. It’s a chance to roll, reset, and rise back up.

Finding My Strength in Shotokan Karate

Earning my 2nd Brown Belt in Shotokan Karate wasn’t just about belts—it was about belief in myself. The structured forms, or katas, taught me patience. Every movement had meaning; every block was a statement.

In sparring, I discovered my confidence. I wasn’t just defending; I was owning my space. That confidence crept into other areas of my life—from work to relationships. The brown belt wasn’t the end goal but represented how far I’d come. It made me believe I could tackle the next challenge, in martial arts or otherwise.

Each style was like a new chapter in my growth, filling gaps I didn’t even realise I had. Grappling gave me patience, boxing gave me strategy, and karate gave me confidence. These lessons didn’t stay in the dojo—they followed me into every corner of my life.

Overcoming Verbal Abuse

Martial arts became my refuge when words cut deeper than any physical blow. Growing up, verbal abuse wasn’t just an occasional occurrence—it was an uninvited constant in my life. Snide comments, hurtful words, and invasive criticisms wore me down over time. I felt powerless, like I had no armor to protect myself. Walking into the dojo was the first step toward changing that narrative.

Building Self-Confidence

I still remember the first time I nailed a combo during a boxing session. It felt like a breakthrough moment, as if I finally had control over something in my life. Hits and missteps were just part of the process—no ridicule, no judgment. For the first time, I was allowed to fail without being torn apart.

The instructor’s encouragement, paired with the camaraderie of the group, planted the seed of self-confidence. Each small success in training built on the last, like laying bricks for an unshakable foundation. Titles or belts didn’t matter as much as how I began carrying myself outside the gym. I stood taller, spoke firmer, and even started shielding myself from the verbal jabs I was once too scared to deflect.

Transforming Pain into Power

Some days were tough. Memories of being put down would creep in, uninvited, as I trained. But instead of letting it crush me, I learned to channel it into something productive. During sparring, I’d pour every ounce of frustration into perfecting my strikes. Throwing a punch felt like throwing away the weight of the words that once held me back.

I remember one particular day when I was grappling—physically pinned and struggling to escape. The situation felt metaphorical, like the verbal abuse of my past was pinning me down again. But my coach’s voice broke through: “Breathe. Focus. The way out is always there.”

Those words stuck with me more than any shot or submission ever could. By working through the techniques, I learned persistence. I could transform my pain into strength, one movement at a time.

Facing those challenges taught me resilience. It wasn’t just about getting stronger physically; it was about silencing the doubts in my mind. What began as frustration evolved into determination, and eventually into empowerment. Now, when I hear negativity, it doesn’t hit the same—it bounces off as I’ve built my own emotional armour through martial arts.

Why “Defence” Matters

Defence isn’t just about punches and kicks. It’s how we defend our minds against negativity, our rights against injustice, and our boundaries from being crossed.

Think about it—how often do women feel like they have to “balance it all” or stay silent? Defence is about breaking that chain. It’s about saying no when needed and standing tall even when things get tough. Whether it’s tackling workplace discrimination or mastering self-defence techniques, every aspect empowers. The word “defence” resonates with me because it champions resilience and preparation.

Empowering Women Through Knowledge

You’ll notice a theme throughout my site—knowledge is power. It’s not just about arming women with tools but helping them understand they’re capable. Sometimes we forget, right? We downplay our strength.

Many posts focus on sharing stories of amazing women, from activists making waves to everyday heroes standing their ground. Why? Because these spark hope. When you see someone else achieve, it’s easier to believe you can too.

Plus, practical knowledge—like how to read situations or set boundaries—can literally change lives. And every reader who takes away one practical skill or mindset shift makes the effort worthwhile.

Breaking the Cycle of Fear

Fear holds people back. It’s insidious, creeping into every aspect of life for too many women. “What if I wear the wrong thing?” “What if I walk home too late?” These fears become ingrained, and that’s not okay.

The aim of this blog is to challenge that fear head-on. Whether it’s through motivational stories, instructional guides, or hard facts, I want women to know they don’t have to live scared. Fear is natural, but being paralyzed by it doesn’t have to be.

What Keeps Me Going

People often ask, “Why do you devote so much time to this blog?” And the answer is simple—it’s personal. I’ve seen the struggles and lived some experiences myself. There’s something incredibly rewarding about knowing you’re making even a small difference.

When someone emails to say they feel stronger or safer thanks to the blog, it’s priceless. Seriously, moments like that remind me why I started. Women sharing their stories, their triumphs, and even their struggles—they inspire me just as much as (hopefully) I inspire them.

Small Ripple; Big Wave

One voice can’t change the world, but it can make ripples. Each ripple reaches someone else, and before you know it, it’s a wave. My blog’s reach may be humble, but the feedback I get tells me the wave is growing.

I like to think of it as planting seeds. You never know where or how they’ll grow, and that’s the beauty of it. Small steps lead to big transformations. This blog is a small step toward a world where women are more confident, capable, and empowered.

Why It’s So Personal

All of this comes from a deep-rooted belief that every woman deserves better. Better safety. Better opportunities. Better respect. At its core, this blog is my small contribution to that belief.

I’m not an expert in everything, but I’m passionate. And honestly, that’s enough to start. “Women Aware Defence” is my heart on a page. It’s part of who I am, what I believe, and what I want to see in the world.

Final Thoughts On My Story : Empowerment in Every Word

“Women Aware Defense” isn’t just my story—it’s a platform for others too. It’s a collection of voices, ideas, and dreams, aiming to build a stronger and safer world.

If you’re reading this, remember: your strength lies in your awareness and actions. You’re capable of more than you know, and the defense starts within. Let’s continue to inspire and empower one another.
